Acting policy chief of the Democratic Party of Japan Sengoku Yoshito on April 16 stated that a halt to all nuclear reactors would mean “for Japan, in a sense, to commit mass suicide” at a lecture meeting in Nagoya City in Aichi Prefecture.
His statement represents the DPJ and government intention to resume operations of offline nuclear reactors at the earliest possible date by threatening the public with looming “power shortages”.
During the lecture meeting, Sengoku said that the party will steadily carry forward procedures to seek consent from local municipalities hosting a nuclear power plant.
As for the public distrust in the “nuclear community of interest” profiting from nuclear power generation, the DPJ policymaker showed that his party is unwilling to eliminate the distrust and said, “It’s obvious that Japan’s economy and society cannot survive without electricity.”
