A U.S. sergeant was convicted of a hit-and-run homicide as he withdrew his appeal to the higher court on May 24.
Clyde Andrew Gunn, assigned to the U.S. Army Torii Station, ran over a 66-year-old Okinawan man, Hokama Masakazu, in Okinawa’s Yomitan Village in November 2009. However, Gunn ran away from the scene. The victim was later found dead on the scene by a passerby.
The Naha District Court in December last year recognized that Gunn had caused Hokama’s death and ordered the suspect to pay 7.7 million yen in compensation. He then appealed this ruling to the Fukuoka High Court but finally decided to retract the appeal.
