Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) made more than 90% of its profits from electricity rates paid by households during the 5 years since 2006. Japanese Communist Party lawmaker Yoshii Hidekatsu revealed this fact from government’s data.
The data was submitted to a meeting of a special commission in the economy ministry to examine power rates. TEPCO has applied to the government for approval to its electric rate hike of 10% on average for households starting in July.
According to the data, the power company made a profit of 527.2 billion yen from the household sector in the 5 years, making up 91% of its total earnings. On the other hand, the utility gained 51.9 billion yen from business sector, only 9% of the total.
The amount of power sold to households in the same period was 547.3 billion kWh, accounting for 38% of the total. The quantity supplied to businesses was 900.3 billion kWh, 62%.
The data also shows that though the top 10 power-consuming companies paid 11.8 yen per kWh, households paid as much as 23.34 yen.
It is apparent that the utility extracts unfair profits from individual households.
Other data presented by the economy ministry on May 23 shows that all 10 power companies including TEPCO earned around 70% of their income from rates imposed on households and 30% from businesses during the 5 years.
There is little difference in the profit structure among the operators.
