Residents in Kyushu filed two lawsuits on May 30 demanding that Kyushu Electric Power Co., decommission its two nuclear power plants in the region.
In Saga Prefecture, northern Kyushu, 1,178 plaintiffs filed a suit with the Saga District Court calling on the reactor operator to permanently refrain from resuming idled reactors at the Genkai power plant in Genkai Town.
This is the third filing of lawsuits in their behalf and the number of plaintiffs totals 4,252. The biggest NPP lawsuit in Japan has become even bigger.
On the same day, in southern Kyushu, 1,114 citizens brought a case against the utility in the Kagoshima District Court demanding the decommissioning of reactors at the Sendai power plant in Satsumasendai City, Kagoshima Prefecture.
They are residents of thirteen prefectures including Kagoshima, Miyazaki, and Kumamoto.
The counsel for the plaintiffs commented that they are including more plaintiffs and plan to file another case.
