A group of atomic bomb survivors (Hibakusha) expressed their opposition to the restart of operations of offline nuclear reactors in Japan.
The Japan Confederation of A-and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations (Nihon Hidankyo) on June 6 adopted a special resolution in its general meeting to oppose the resumption of operations of nuclear reactors at the Oi nuclear power plant in Fukui Prefecture.
The resolution states, “Many people in Hiroshima and Nagasaki were exposed to radiation from the atomic bombings 67 years ago and have experienced the tortures of hell for a long time.” It goes on to state that A-bomb sufferers strongly protest against nuclear power generation as it uses the same nuclear fission reaction as used for the A-bombs.
The organization set a new goal to “do away with nuclear energy in order to defend people’s lives” at the meeting.
In the discussion, A-bomb sufferers’ sons and daughters spoke up from the floor one after another. A participant from Nagasaki said, “We held gatherings and set up an ‘association of the second generation of Hibakusha’ in 2 areas in the prefecture. We hope to carry on the victims’ persevering struggle.”
