Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on March 7 called for the cancellation of a “pluthermal” power generation plan which the Tokyo Electric Power Company is promoting in Fukushima Prefecture.
The “pluthermal” plan intends to use plutonium-uranium mixed oxide (MOX) fuel at a nuclear power station in Fukushima Prefecture and Fukushima Governor Sato Yuhei has expressed his intention to accept it.
Describing the plan as “reckless and dangerous,” Shii said at a press conference in Fukushima, “With its low melting point, MOX fuel could lead to a meltdown or other severe accidents. The ‘pluthermal’ plan could also make control rods less effective.”
He stated that all nuclear fuel recycle systems must be withdrawn from Japan.
