The Noda Cabinet on August 24 approved the 4 candidates nominated to be members of a new nuclear regulatory body, including a former official of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency who is supportive of nuclear power generation.
The government is attempting to get this approved by both chambers before the end of next week.
The Noda Cabinet did not change its initial proposal even though it met with mounting opposition from the public as well as from ruling and opposition party members.
Former Atomic Energy Agency official Tanaka Shunichi, who was nominated to head the new regulatory panel, stated at a Diet hearing that the human race “can control” nuclear power and expressed his hope to promote “research and development of a safer nuclear reactor.”
