Akahata editorial (excerpts)
The U.N. Security Council has adopted an unanimous resolution condemning North Korea’s launch of a long-range missile on December 12. North Korea should accept the international community’s unified demand and refrain from any future launch of ballistic missiles or nuclear testing.
Resolution 2087 demands that North Korea “not proceed with any further launches using ballistic missile technology” and “abandon all nuclear weapons and existing nuclear programmes in a complete.”
Development of nuclear weapons poses a serious threat to the world’s peace and safety. North Korea should realize the importance of the latest action of the international community in protest against its continuous disregard of the international consensus and refusal to abandon its nuclear weapons program.
In order to avert a crisis and solve North Korea’s nuclear issue, political dialogues are essential. The resolution expresses “desire for a peaceful, diplomatic and political solution to the situation.”
It calls for the resumption of the Six Party Talks, urging all the participants to “intensify their efforts on the full and expeditious implementation of the 19 September 2005 Joint Statement issued by China, the DPRK, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation and the United States, with a view to achieving the verifiable denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula in a peaceful manner and to maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in northeast Asia.” Countries concerned need to make further efforts in this regard.
North Korea has released a statement in response to the latest resolution, pledging to develop its military strength, including deterrence capability. As it conducted nuclear tests following missile launches in 2006 and 2009, the statement is regarded as an indication of its intent to carry out a third nuclear test.
If North Korea sticks to its nuclear development policy, it will unavoidably isolate itself from the rest of the world.
