2013 April 10 - 16 [ANTI-N-ARMS]

1,100th monthly ‘6th and 9th’ antinuke action at world heritage site takes place

April 10, 2013
A teachers’ union in Kyoto on April 9 held its 1,100th monthly “6th and 9th action” calling for the abolition of nuclear weapons at Kiyomizu-dera, a world heritage Buddhist temple.

The women’s bureau of the Kyoto Prefectural Teachers’ Union has organized this monthly action since 1971 at the temple, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Kyoto.

Participants in the action handed out to domestic and international visitors leaflets calling for public support for the international signature-collection drive, “Appeal for a Total Ban on Nuclear Weapons” in Japanese as well as in English, Korean, and Chinese. During their one-hour action, 210 signatures were collected.

An 84-year-old former union member, who has taken part in the action since it was launched, said, “I’m proud of my union’s effort to hold the action regularly. Even so, I hope that the day in which the signature collection campaign is no longer needed will come as soon as possible.”

*6&9 Action: a campaign on the 6th and 9th of every month, the days of U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
