JCP in Tokyo demands 2020 Olympics to be in harmony with lives and nature

September 26, 2013
Japanese Communist Party members of the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly are demanding that the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics be conducted in harmony with people’s lives and the natural environment.

JCP Sone Hajime on September 25 took the floor for questioning at a plenary session. It was the first session of party representatives’ questions since the July Tokyo assembly election.

Sone said that people both at home and abroad are raising concerns over Tokyo’s hosting of the Summer Games, and that the Tokyo JCP can hardly place confidence in the government to be socially and environmentally responsible.

He expressed, “We, however, will strive to promote world peace and amity through sports so that the Olympic spirit can take shape,” and demanded that the Summer Games be held on a reasonable, people-first, and environmentally-friendly basis.

Furthermore, he criticized Prime Minister Abe Shinzo’s remark made at the IOC meeting, which was that the situation of radiation contaminated-water at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant has been brought under control, as being out of touch with reality.

Sone stated that Tokyo Governor Inose Naoki, who was present at the meeting with Abe, should make all-out efforts together with Abe to help end the contaminated water crisis.

Inose in response said, “It’s better to see things in a positive light,” indicating his stance of staying away from things which throw cold water on Tokyo’s hosting of the 2020 Games.
