The approval rating of the Japanese Communist Party in an opinion poll by the Nikkei Shimbun came second only to the Liberal Democratic Party.
This represents the highest rating of the JCP since February 2001 when a similar poll was taken, the paper reported.
The Nikkei opinion poll result published on September 30 showed that those who favor the JCP increased by two percentage points to 6% from the previous survey last month. The approval rate of the LDP stood at 55%, the Democratic Party of Japan 5%, the Japan Restoration and Komei parties 3%, and the Your Party 2%.
In another opinion poll conducted on Fuji TV’s political debate program at the end of August, the second-largest number of respondents, 6.2%, said that they will vote for the JCP in the next election. The LDP ranked the highest in this poll.
In the Nikkei poll, regarding Prime Minister Abe Shinzo’s remark that the situation of radioactive water leakage at the Fukushima nuclear power plant “was fully controlled”, 82% of respondents answered that they “feel uncomfortable”, while only 13% regarded as “appropriate”.
