Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on November 8 held talks with visiting Foreign Minister of Cuba Bruno Rodriguez at the JCP headquarters.
They talked about a UN resolution calling for the lifting of the U.S. embargo on Cuba, the controversial multinational free trade pact (TPP), and bilateral relationships between the JCP and the Communist Party of Cuba.
Cuba, representing the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), proposed that negotiations on a Nuclear Weapons Convention be launched at UN high-level meetings on nuclear disarmament.
Shii said that he is looking to the proposal as an impetus to states to take action.
Rodriguez pointed to the historical significance of the CELAC which respects diversity and independence. “It is our duty” to work to achieve an international consensus for the abolition of nuclear weapons, the minister added.
