Local village assembly demands Okinawa governor’s resignation

January 21, 2014
The Kitanakagusuku Village Assembly in Okinawa Prefecture on January 17 adopted a resolution calling for the resignation of Governor Nakaima Hirokazu with a majority vote.

This is the first resolution of this kind among the 41 local assemblies in the prefecture.

The resolution points out that the governor’s approval to the Abe government’s request to reclaim land off the Henoko district in Nago City for the construction of a new U.S. base as an alternative to the Futenma base violates his election promise to oppose the planned base relocation within the prefecture. Nakaima “no longer meets the qualification to represent Okinawa people,” it strongly asserts.
