“I felt an extremely hostile atmosphere on the floor,” said Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo following his interpellation at a House of Representatives plenary session on January 29.
At a press conference in the Diet building, Shii explained that many Liberal Democratic Party parliamentarians started hooting and jeering at him when he criticized Prime Minister Abe Shinzo for visiting the war-glorifying Yasukuni Shrine. “I’ve never seen such a scene in the Diet,” he added.
When the JCP representative pointed out during his interpellation, “The Yasukuni Shrine honors Class-A war criminals as victims who were falsely charged by the Allies’ unilateral tribunal,” those LDP lawmakers shouted, “It was (a false charge)!” Some of them flung abusive words at Shii, such as, “Get the hell out of Japan!”
Some opposition parties have agreed with the prime minister’s proposal made during his policy speech to promote policy negotiations with “responsible opposition parties”. Shii stated that they are becoming like the reactionary collaborative force of parties that had taken part in the prewar “Imperial Rule Assistance Association”.
Citing the current moves to adversely revise the Constitution and to allow Japan to exercise the right to collective self-defense, Shii stressed, “Those parties are encouraging the Abe Cabinet to go ahead and promote runaway policies. They should no longer be considered opposition parties.”
