City’s cuts in social security payments were illegal: court decision finalized

February 1, 2014
Oita City on January 31 decided to not appeal the decision of the Oita District Court that the city’s cuts in social welfare payments to a 57-year-old man was illegal. The judgment was finalized.

Oita City Organization for Protection of Life and Health President Fukuma Kenji, who has supported the plaintiff, commented as follows:

It was a matter of course for the city to accept the court decision. The plaintiff suffered from cuts in social security benefits for nine years just because he owned a car, and was forced to live below the minimum standard of living. The city’s treatment in his case goes against the provisions of the Livelihood Protection Law and violates the right to live guaranteed by Article 25 of the Constitution. The city had no choice but to take the ruling seriously.
