Residents in Shimane Prefecture on February 7 submitted to the governor a request to create an ordinance to depart from nuclear power and promote renewable energy sources locally.
Shimane is the only prefecture in Japan hosting a nuclear power plant at its prefectural capital.
Handing to Governor Mizoguchi Zenbe their statement attached with 83,323 signatures (14% of voters in Shimane), representatives of the residents demanded that the prefectural government utilize the abundant natural resources in the prefecture in order to achieve local energy sustainability.
The governor responded to them by saying that he will carefully read the request and incorporate their ideas in a bill he will propose to the prefectural assembly.
