US C-130 transport aircraft loses a metal part

June 6, 2014
It was learned on June 3 that a U.S. C-130 transport airplane of the Yokota Air Base in Tokyo had lost a metal latch possibly while in flight.

The number of parts-loss incidents involving C-130s alone has already amounted to three this year. They have caused 10 drop accidents since 1987.

A group of mayors from surrounding municipalities (Tokyo Metropolis, Tachikawa, Akishima, Fussa, Musashimurayama and Hamura cities, and Mizuho Town) on the following day submitted a letter requesting that Colonel Mark R. August, the commander of the 374th Airlift Wing at Yokota AB, take measures to prevent recurrence of such incidents.

Touching on two other parts-drop incidents in March, they in the letter express regret over the accident this time because despite their repeated requests for more thorough preventive measures none have been announced.

They call for stricter maintenance of C-130s, prompt disclosure of all relevant information, and suspension of flights until their safety is confirmed.
