A Japanese company used six Indonesians as “slave laborers” on farms.
The six workers and their lawyer on June 23 filed a complaint with the Nagasaki District Court, seeking payment of unpaid wages.
Last summer, those workers signed up for an Indonesian temp staff agency’s recruitment of “trainees” to learn advanced agricultural techniques in Japan. The agency explained to them that each worker will be able to receive six million rupiahs (about 50,000 yen) for the three month-long work contract and be provided with living expenses during their stay in Japan.
The six came to Japan early in December with a short-term visa permitting them to stay for up to 90 days. They were forced to work over 10 hours a day in the fields on the drained land in Nagasaki’s Isahaya Bay.
Matsuo Farm Co., the Japanese employer of these “trainees”, promised to give them two days off per month, but it made them work nonstop in December. On top of that, the company has yet to pay them compensation for their services.
The complainants demand a total of 13.6 million yen in damages, including back pay.
