The Japanese Communist Party is working hard to provide relief measures for victims of a torrential downpour in Hiroshima City.
From the night of August 19 to the early morning of the following day, Hiroshima City was hit by one of the heaviest rain falls in history. As of August 20, it claimed the lives of 36 people and left another seven missing, mainly due to landslides.
The JCP Central Committee on August 20 set up a taskforce to address this issue headed by Secretariat Head Yamashita Yoshiki. JCP member of the House of Councilors Nihi Sohei, who is a member of the taskforce, went to Hiroshima that day.
On the same day, the JCP Hiroshima Prefectural Committee also established a special team to assist in the disaster. They decided to conduct on-site inspections, make representations to the local governments to call for improvement in relief measures, and organize volunteers to help the victims.
JCP Hiroshima City Assembly member Chikamatsu Satoko together with Fujii Toshiko, who plans to run for the city assembly election, in the morning of the day visited a municipal office of one of the most seriously-hit areas to gather information and then went to inspect evacuation sites.
Later on the day, Fujii along with a JCP candidate for the prefectural assembly election conducted on-site inspections of landslide sites and listened to the disaster victims.
That day, Prime Minister Abe Shinzo was staying at his summer house in Yamanashi Prefecture. While ordering related government departments to do their best to help victims of the extreme weather, he went to a golf course at 7:30 am with former Prime Minister Mori Yoshiro and Fuji Television Network Chairman Hieda Hisashi. After playing golf for two hours, Abe left the golf course for his office. This clearly shows Abe’s attitude of indifference to people’s lives and security.
