Gov’t’s hardline stance on construction of new US base in Okinawa is unacceptable: Yamashita

November 18, 2014
Japanese Communist Party Secretariat Head Yamashita Yoshiki on November 17 said that Abe government chief spokesperson’s comment trampling on Okinawan people’s will is unforgivable.

Commenting on the victory of the base opponent in the Okinawa governor’s election, Chief Cabinet Secretary Suga Yoshihide earlier on the same day at a press conference said that the Abe administration will go ahead with the construction of the new U.S. base in Okinawa’s Henoko district “as planned”.

Yamashita pointed out that the Abe government’s arrogant stance toward Okinawan people will face voters’ severe verdict again in the upcoming general election.

Yamashita stressed that in the snap election, the JCP will appeal to voters to support the JCP to achieve the closure and withdrawal of the U.S. Futenma base in Okinawa.
