JCP candidate wins JCP-LDP showdown in Kitakyushu City by-election

January 27, 2015
The Japanese Communist Party candidate beat his Liberal Democratic Party rival in a one-seat contest in the Kitakyushu City Assembly by-election on January 25 by increasing his support from local farmers and shop owners.

The winner of the JCP vs. LDP match, Yamauchi Ryosei received 10,142 votes, up 90% from the number of votes the JCP received in the 2014 general election, making the JCP be the 9-member group in the 61-seat city assembly.

In other local elections conducted in eight cities and one town on the same day, all 17 JCP candidates won.

In Uenohara City (Yamanashi Pref.), a JCP challenger came out second in the city assembly election by receiving 260% of the vote the JCP candidate received in the previous election. He won a seat in the assembly which used to have no JCP assemblyperson present. In Shimonoseki City (Yamaguchi Pref.), the JCP increased its seats in the assembly by one to four. In most of the elections, the party enjoyed an increase in the number of votes for party candidates.
