Progressive forum, the bridge for various actions against Abe’s war bills

June 21, 2015
The National Association for a Peaceful, Democratic, and Progressive Japan (Kakushinkon) on June 20 held their 35th general meeting in Tokyo, adopting a resolution calling for more efforts to block the enactment of war legislation which is currently under Diet discussions.

In the meeting with 220 delegates from all the 47 prefectures attending, Odagawa Yoshikazu of the National Confederation of Trade Unions (Zenroren) said that Kakushinkon is becoming a bridge for joint struggles among various organizations across Japan to change the Abe administration’s pro-war policies. A further increase in cooperation is necessary to stop the war bills from being passed, he stressed.

Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo reported on the present Diet situation regarding the security-related bills. He said that Diet deliberations in rapid succession have brought to light the danger and the unconstitutionality of what Abe calls “peace security legislation”, and that the government can no longer stand up to Diet questioning. With no other option but to scrap the bills left to the Abe regime, “It is people’s power that will eventually thwart his aim to have the bills passed. Let’s show our united strength in and out of the Diet to bury the war bills,” Shii called on Kakushinkon members.

A delegate from Iwate said, “60 education-related officials including college presidents and former school board presidents have sent messages of support to local Kakushinkon campaigns working against Abe’s move to turn Japan into a war-fighting nation.”

A Tokyo delegate said, “A concerted approach beyond the boundaries of the JCP, Social Democratic Party, and independent assemblypersons is increasing in 25 municipal assemblies in Tokyo.”

A youth group delegate said, “Young people are one after another standing up against the moves toward war and standing up for the Constitution.”

A women’s association delegate said, “A human-chain action held earlier today in opposition to the war legislation was a great success with 15,000 women participating.”

The Association for a Peaceful, Democratic and Progressive Japan (Kakushinkon) was formed at the call of the JCP in 1980 for the purpose of promoting solidarity with a wide range of people, regardless of political or ideological differences, to achieve the common objectives of peace, democracy, and better living standards.

Kakushinkon is increasing ties between nonpartisan people and the JCP, and developing as a movement for building a progressive majority that supports democratic change in politics. Many public figures are collaborating with Kakushinkon and contributing to heightening public awareness.
