High school students request Dietmembers to kill war bills

August 29, 2015
A group of high school students in the Tokyo metropolitan area who wish for a peaceful future visited the House of Councilors Members’ Office Building on August 28, making representations to each political party to request them to work to throw out the proposed war bills.

In a representation to the Japanese Communist Party, Tamura Tomoko and Tatsumi Kotaro received their visit.

“This is my first-ever visit to the Diet. I’m very nervous,” said a third-year student entering the JCP room. She complained that ruling party politicians are paying no heed to public opposition and seem intent to ram through the bills.

An 18-year-old student said, “I want to protect the peaceful livelihoods of people close to me and the safety of my future childern.” Another student in his sophomore year explained to the JCP legislators the past activities he engaged in such as study meetings, antiwar rallies, and demonstrations.

JCP Tamura who has a son in college and a daughter in high school responded by saying, “You have only a few days left before your summer vacation ends. Thank you for visiting us. In the Diet, the upcoming week will be very important in regard to the war bills. In the same way as you, we will also do everything possible to get the bills scrapped.”

These students in June participated in a young people’s rally supporting the peace Constitution and paraded through the popular shopping street of Shibuya in Tokyo. Hoping to continue to work for peace, they on August 19 founded the group of high school students united for a peaceful future.
