Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo soon after the Diet session ended on September 25 called on all JCP lawmakers to be fully committed to working to realize a provisional coalition government seeking to abrogate the security-related legislation.
At the outset of his speech to a JCP Dietmembers’ assembly, Shii thanked them for their great efforts made in the just-ended Diet session in order to scrap the war bills by such means as submitting a non-confidence motion against the Abe Cabinet in cooperation with other opposition parties.
Shii criticized the Abe government for having the unconstitutional bills rammed through the Diet in a session the ruling LDP-Komei coalition forcibly extended by the longest-ever 95 days in postwar Japan’s history to September 27 on the calendar.
He then stressed the need for opposition parties to band together in response to the huge public movement that emerged united against the war laws, and called on the JCP representatives to work even harder to seek cooperation among opposition parties to form a “National Coalition Government” to repeal the war legislation as shown in the “proposal” the party published earlier.
He, however, explained that the proposed government will just be a temporary coalition consisting of political parties, organizations, and individuals coming together based on the common ground and consensus to work to abolish the controversial legislation and restore constitutionalism.
“After fulfilling the commitment the provisional government makes to the people, we should dissolve this government and hold national elections again to have the public decide on Japan’s future course,” Shii added.
Saying, “Whether this ‘proposal’ will be successful or not depends heavily on strong public pressure,” he expressed his determination to do everything possible to join hands with as many organizations and individuals as possible to increase the momentum needed to create an even greater united national movement calling for democracy.
He concluded his speech by saying, “The 189th Diet session ended today and this is the day on which our new challenge begins. Let’s defeat the worst-ever government without delay! Putting aside differences in political stances, thoughts, and beliefs, let us bring back constitutionalism, pacifism, and democracy to Japan!”
