Members of civic groups visited the Education Bureau of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government on January 29 to submit signatures demanding the cancellation of a plan to abolish evening classes at metropolitan high schools. A list of supporters of the signature campaign includes Professor Omura Satoshi, a Nobel Prize winner in Physiology or Medicine in 2015.
As part of a plan to “reform” public high schools, the metropolitan board of education announced in November 2015 that it will abolish evening classes at three high schools in three wards of Tokyo and another high school in the suburban city of Tachikawa as early as April 2018.
The petition states, “It is unacceptable for the metropolitan authorities to close any more high school evening classes which are rooted in communities and have a long history.” The total number of submitted signatures has exceeded 11,300.
