Peace activists in Kanagawa Prefecture on August 18 visited the U.S. Yokosuka Naval Base and demanded a halt to a port call of the U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Nimitz at Yokosuka Port.
Participants included representatives of the Kanagawa Council against A & H Bombs (Gensuikyo), the Kanagawa Federation of Trade Unions, and the Kanagawa Peace Committee.
The Nimitz will reportedly visit Yokosuka, which has been used as a homeport of the U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carrier George Washington since last September, in late August while the GW is to sea.
The statement submitted by the participants to the base commander points out that the Nimits’ visit is an attempt to turn the Yokosuka Base into a permanent home base of U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and will increase the possibility of radiation-related accidents. - Akahata, August 20, 2009
