The Initiatives from Osaka (Osaka Ishin no Kai) held a party convention on March 26 in Osaka City and adopted a policy to work to amend the Constitution, showing its intention to act as a pro-revision force in concert with the government led by Prime Minister Abe Shinzo.
The party policy chief, Shimoji Mikio, at the convention shouted, “We will work to accomplish what the LDP has been delaying,” revealing the true colors of itself as a party supporting Abe from the far right.
Head of the party Matsui Ichiro, the Osaka governor, is committed to working to hold more than two thirds of Diet seats, the number necessary to initiate constitutional revision, by his party together with the Liberal Democratic and Komei parties.
In the face of increasing cooperation among five opposition parties, including the Japanese Communist Party and the Democratic Party, Osaka Ishin no Kai has openly shown a strong sense of rivalry toward the JCP and the DPJ, determined to not allow the two parties to win in the Osaka constituency in the House of Councilors election.
Osaka Ishin no Kai in a House of Representatives committee moved in line with the Abe government and voted down a bill jointly submitted in early March by the five opposition parties to improve care workers’ working conditions. This was a clear example how Osaka Ishin no Kai complements the LDP-Komei coalition.
To drive Abe advocates into a minority in the Diet will give Abe’s runaway policies a crushing blow and will lead to further development of the unity among the opposition forces. It is necessary to overcome the LDP-Komei alliance and its supplementary forces in the upcoming Upper House election in order to stop them from changing the Constitution.
Former Osaka Mayor Hashimoto Toru was the person who created Osaka Ishin no Kai in the first place. After repeated mergers and breakups, the party ended up what it is today. He remains as senior adviser to the party whose members are mostly former LDP politicians.
