The Japanese Communist, Democratic, Social Democratic, and People’s Life parties on May 27 jointly submitted to the House of Representatives a bill to eliminate discrimination against LGBT people.
The bill is designated to prohibit administrative organizations and business entities from discriminating against individuals based on their sexual orientation and gender identity. It stipulates that relevant ministries will give guidance or advice to those violating the ban. The bill also requires both the central and local governments to take measures to eliminate such discrimination in classrooms and workplaces.
At a press conference held after the submission of the bill, JCP member of the House of Representatives Hatano Kimie pointed out that more and more countries are banning discrimination against sexual minorities. She said, “Many LGBT long for a legislative measure to protect them. We will work hard to expand the cross-party collaboration to enact the bill.”
DP member of the House of Representatives Nishimura Chinami expressed her determination to attract as many support as possible to the bill.
JCP Dietmember Ikeuchi Saori, a member of a cross-party parliamentarians’ group on LGBT issues, is also one of the bill proposers.
