Prime Minister Abe Shinzo on September 28 hinted at promoting Diet deliberations on constitutional revision in line with the draft constitution proposed by the governing Liberal Democratic Party.
In the interpellation at a Lower House plenary session on that day, Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo asked PM Abe, “Is it LDP policy to have the Commissions on the Constitution of both Houses engage in discussions based on the LDP’s draft constitution?”
Abe said in response, “As the LDP presented its draft constitution, each political party should express its view on constitutional amendments in the Diet discussions.”
Shii said to reporters after the session, “The prime minister did not deny that the LDP’s draft will be the basis of the Diet discussions on constitutional revision and virtually acknowledged the possibility. I think it is possible to cooperate with other opposition parties in thwarting Abe's attempt.”
