Nikko City gov’t collects 953 Hibakusha Appeal signatures

June 15, 2017
The gov’t of Nikko City in Tochigi Prefecture, which is famous for the World Heritage “Shrines and Temples of Nikko”, collected 953 Hibakusha Appeal signatures calling for the total abolition of nuclear weapons.

Nikko City adopted the declaration of being a nuclear-free city to seek a world without nuclear weapons, and every year sends a peace delegation of junior high school students to the Atomic-bombed city of Hiroshima.

In May, local members of the New Japan Women’s Association (Shinfujin) visited City Mayor Saito Fumio, Chief Secretary of the city’s Education Board Maeda Hiroshi, and Speaker of the city assembly Tamura Kosaku to ask for their cooperation in the signature-collection campaign in support of the Hibakusha’s appeal for the elimination of nuclear weapons.

The three, including the city mayor, agreed to fully support the signature campaign and accepted 100 signature sheets in order to collect signatures.

The City on June 14 handed over the 953 signatures to the local Shinfujin.

The signatures collected by Nikko City will be submitted to the UN via a Japanese delegation participating in the second session of the UN conference on a nuclear weapons ban treaty.
