‘Mayors for Peace’ calls on all countries to join UN N-ban treaty
|
The 9th General Conference of the Mayors for Peace ended on August 10 after adopting “the Nagasaki Appeal” which calls on all governments in the world to sign the UN treaty on the prohibition of nuclear weapons.
The organization is composed of 7,417 cities in 162 countries and regions around the world.
The Nagasaki Appeal states that all member cities will further strengthen cooperation with the A-bomb survivors (Hibakusha), civil societies, and countries that became the driving force for the adoption of the N-ban treaty, and encourage their own governments to join the treaty. The Appeal emphasizes that member cities will in particular pressure governments of nuclear weapons states and countries under their nuclear umbrella to take part in the treaty.
In the three-day General Conference that began on August 8, representatives of member cities exchanged their views on activities working for a realization of safe and dynamic cities in order to advance the process toward a world without nuclear weapons.
The conference also adopted a special resolution calling for an early entry into force of the UN treaty on the prohibition of nuclear weapons.
