JCP: Tokyo assembly should fulfill its responsibility to closely monitor governor’s policies

The extraordinary session of the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly closed on September 5. Japanese Communist Party assemblyperson Oyama Tomoko, who is the secretary general of the JCP Tokyo assembly members’ group, published a comment.

The extraordinary session was convened in order to discuss a basic policy on the Tsukiji market relocation to Toyosu which Governor Koike Yuriko announced in June and a supplementary budget drafted to implement the basic policy.

Following is the gist of Oyama’s comment:

Whether to move the Tsukiji market to the contaminated site was a major campaign issue in the July 2 Tokyo assembly election.

In the extraordinary session which started on August 29, the JCP emphasized the need to thoroughly discuss the issue in an open and clear manner. From this point of view, the JCP demanded setting up a special budget committee, holding a question-answer debate with the governor, and summoning market workers and other parties concerned as unsworn witnesses.

The JCP request, however, was rejected by Governor Koike’s party, “Tomin First no Kai (Tokyoites First)” and the Komei Party which together hold a majority in the assembly.

The JCP will continue to play a role in keeping a close eye on the governor’s policies and work hard to have the governor respond to Tokyo citizens’ demands.
