US carrier-borne aircraft crashes into waters off Tokyo's remote island

November 23, 2017
A U.S. carrier-borne aircraft on November 22 plunged into the high seas off Okinotori Island in Tokyo's Ogasawara Islands.

According to the U.S. military and Japan's Defense Ministry, the aircraft in question was a C-2 transport airplane based on the U.S. Navy atomic-powered aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan. The crash occurred on route from the U.S. Iwakuni base (Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Pref.) to the USS Ronald Reagan which was taking part in military drills being conducted jointly by the U.S. forces, the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force, and the Canadian Navy. Eight crewmembers were rescued but the other three remain missing.

This year alone, crashes involving U.S. military airplanes such as MV-22 Ospreys and CH-53E helicopters happened in succession.
