PM Abe turns his back on proposal to offer congratulations to ICAN

Prime Minister Abe Shinzo on November 30 at a House of Councilors Budget Committee meeting effectively rejected a proposal calling for officially offering congratulations to this year’s Nobel Peace Prize winner, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN).

ICAN won the Noble Peace Prize for its contribution to realizing the UN treaty banning nuclear weapons.

At the meeting, a Komeito Party lawmaker made a proposal calling on the Abe government to send a congratulatory message to the award ceremony scheduled for December 10 in Oslo, Norway.

PM Abe ignored the proposal and stressed the need to tackle North Korea’s missile development issue and other crises. He is sticking to the argument that efforts for nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation should be made from realistic and practical grounds.
