Iwate Pref. Assembly adopts DYLJ’s petition for state measures to shorten working hours
|
The Iwate Prefectural Assembly on December 11 at its plenary meeting adopted by a majority vote a petition jointly submitted by the Democratic Youth League of Japan Iwate Prefectural Committee and the Iwate youth union to seek state measures to address the issue of excessively long working hours.
The petition also demands an increase in the prefecture’s minimum wage and efforts to secure stable employment for young people.
The two organizations reflected the results of their survey on young workers’ working conditions in the written request. In the survey, many respondents said, “My work seems to never end,” “I cannot take a day off.”
In the petition, the DYLJ and the youth union mentioned that the Abe government aims to submit to the Diet bills to legalize monthly overtime up to 100 hours and create a system that will lead to an expansion of unpaid overtime. They pointed out, “It is clear that the government’s bills will not solve the problem of excessively long working hours.”
DYLJ Iwate Prefectural Committee Chair Fujikura Ryosuke said, “Using this achievement as a foothold, we will strengthen our movements to realize concrete improvements in young people’s working conditions.”
