Emirates Airline gives up appealing court decision in unfair dismissal case

April 24, 2018
Emirates Airline recently withdrew its appeal against the lower court ruling which nullifies unfair dismissals of three female Japanese workers.

The three are members of the Skynetwork union which organizes individual workers in the aviation industry under the umbrella of the Japan Federation of Aviation Workers' Union (Kohkuren).

With the airline’s withdrawal from the court battle, the lower court decision was finalized. The Skynetwork expressed its determination to work even harder to push the company to reinstate the three union members to their original positions.

The three workers were assigned to ticketing jobs at the Dubai-based carrier’s customer center in Osaka Prefecture. In January 2013, they joined the Skynetwork and requested the company to negotiate with the union about various issues at their workplace such as power harassment from supervisors and unpaid overtime. In May the following year, they were ordered to stand by at home and were then fired in September.

In February 2015, the three women workers filed a lawsuit against Emirates with the Osaka District Court and in October 2017, the court judged that three workers’ dismissals were null and void.
