Newspaper workers' union demands eradication of sexual harassment in the media

May 25, 2018

The Japan Federation of Newspaper Workers' Unions (Shimbun Roren) on May 24 made a representation to the Japan Newspaper Publishers and Editors Association, demanding that the working environment for women in the media industry be improved.

Sexual harassment of a TV Asahi female journalist by former Administrative Vice Finance Minister Fukuda Jun'ichi has become the catalyst in exposing a major social problem in Japan.

The union demands that top executives of each company understand sexual harassment as a human rights violation, protect victimized employees, and strictly punish offending employees.

The union also demands a decent work-life balance and an increase in the number of female managers in the media world so that women journalists can continue in their careers.
