JCP to METI: Don’t discharge radioactive Fukushima water into ocean
|
The Japanese Communist Party Dietmembers’ Group on October 23 urged the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry that radiation-contaminated water in storage tanks at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant remain stored and not be discharged into the ocean.
In the petitioning, JCP member of the House of Representatives Takahashi Chizuko pointed out that although the government and Tokyo Electric Power Company recognized that the multi-nuclide removal system (ALPS) failed to purify radioactive water, they have been neglecting to make public this fact. She demanded the disclosure of information and a thorough explanation regarding the matter.
From Fukushima, JCP Prefectural Assembly member Kamiyama Etsuko joined in the petitioning and said that Fukushima citizens are opposed to the release of contaminated water into the sea.
State Minister Isozaki Yoshihiko in reply said that the discharge order is not the final decision and added that the ministry will continue discussing measures to take to deal with the radioactive water issue by taking into account the demands for long-term storage in water tanks.
