Ex-Nissan chair Ghosn rearrested

Tokyo prosecutors on December 10 rearrested former Nissan Motor Chairman Carlos Ghosn on suspicion of underreporting his remuneration by a total of 4.2 billion yen in the company's securities reports for three years until BY2017.

Former Representative Director of the automaker Greg Kelly, Ghosn's close aide, was also rearrested. According to the sources, they both denied the allegations.

The prosecutors on the same day indicted the two for Ghosn's salary understatements of 4.8 billion yen during the five years until BY2014.

Tai Masaru, a lawyer of the counsel of the lawsuits filed by laid-off Nissan temporary workers, commented, "It is hard to believe that these suspects alone engaged in cheating. Nissan itself bears considerable responsibility."

Nissan has created huge profits while placing unreasonable demands on its subcontractors. Under the Ghosn initiative, as many as 20,000 non-regular workers were dismissed in 2009. Tai said, "Despite that, Ghosn sneakily pocketed the money. He is despicable."

Tai continued to say, "Ghosn hasn't been proved guilty yet. I hope the carmaker will liquidate the negative legacy of its former chairman so as to resolve the case. Nissan must clean up the corruption with drastic countermeasures. Otherwise, both contingent workers and fulltime Nissan employees who lost their jobs in the name of 'corporate restructuring' wouldn't be rewarded."
