Shii welcomes Trump’s announcement about second meeting with Kim
|
Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on February 7 said to the press that he welcomes U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to hold a second meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Vietnam later this month.
Regarding the U.S.-North Korea summit meeting slated for February 27 and 28, Shii said, “Following the first meeting in June 2018, the two leaders in their joint statement announced to the international community their commitment to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula and build a peace structure in the region. I hope that the upcoming meeting will mark progress toward achieving this goal.”
Shii said that in this context, the important thing is North Korea’s efforts in taking concrete steps toward a nuclear-weapons-free Korean Peninsula. He also called for the United States’ efforts to implement measures corresponding to North Korea’s efforts. He added, “I hope that the coming second summit talks will open the door to a situation where based on their efforts, the two nations will foster relations with mutual trust and advance a process of denuclearization and the building of a peace structure.”
