Shii expresses his hope for leaders of N. Korea and US to continue their dialogue
|
Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on February 28 published the following statement in regard to the second summit meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un which was held on February 27 and 28 in Hanoi, Vietnam.
In the statement, Shii said that although the two-day summit fell short of reaching an agreement, the U.S. side said that the talks were “productive” and that the two governments will “continue to engage in dialogue”.
Shii referred to the June 2018 joint statement from the first Trump-Kim summit in Singapore in which the two leaders agreed to establish a new bilateral relationship, build a peace structure on the Korean Peninsula, and work together to denuclearize the peninsula. Shii expressed his strong hope that the North Korean and U.S. governments will carry on their discussions in the context of the agreement in an earnest manner to give shape to the two leaders’ consensus to work together to achieve this goal.
