Religious leaders call for nuclear-free Japan and nuclear-free Korean Peninsula

June 8, 2019

A network of religious citizens and the National Christian Council in Japan (NCCJ) on June 7 held a cross-sectorial forum in Tokyo to discuss peace in Japan and on the Korean Peninsula.

NCCJ General Secretary Kim Sungjae said, "We have a lot to learn from South Korea's 'Candle Revolution' and should make use of that experience in our effort to protect constitutional democracy here in Japan."

Kim Kyoung Min, the general secretary of the Korean YMCA in Japan, said, "Unity among religious people in Japan and South Korea will be a key to making possible true peace in Asia. I hope that religious leaders of both countries will play a role in bringing about peace and prosperity in Northeast Asia."

Buddhist monk of the Nichiren Sect Ono Bunko, Protestant Christian Hiki Atsuko (chief director of the NCCJ Christian Education Division), and Professor at Sophia University Mitsunobu Ichiro, a Catholic, also took part in the forum.
