Pro-Civil Alliance candidate beats LDP-Komei-backed rival in mayoral election in Tokyo’s Akiruno City

October 8, 2019

In the mayoral election in Tokyo’s Akiruno City on October 6, Muraki Hideyuki, who concluded policy agreements with a local of the Civil Alliance, defeated his incumbent rival backed by the Liberal Democratic Party and Komei Party.

Muraki received the support of volunteers from the Japanese Communist Party during his election campaign.

The policy agreement made between Muraki and the local Civil Alliance includes the following points: to uphold the Constitution and make the best use of it in policies of the city government; to improve welfare services and promote residents’ participation in local politics in line with the spirit of the Local Autonomy Law; and to expand community bus services.

With these election pledges, Muraki obtained 13,786 votes or 50.15% of the total, winning a victory against his rival, Sawai Toshikazu, by an 88-vote margin.
