JCP effort for admission-free Tokyo museums for youth will bear fruit in spring

February 5, 2020

Admission fees for six Tokyo Metropolitan museums and galleries will be free for high school students and anyone under 18 years old during spring school holidays (Mar.20-Apr.5), meeting the request of the Japanese Communist Party members' group of the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly.

During the Assembly session in December of last year, the JCP group submitted a draft revision of a relevant ordinance so that discount fees or no admission fee will be charged on high school students and children aged 18 or under to view special exhibitions or permanent collections in the Metropolitan-run art facilities, including the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo and the Tokyo Photograph Art Museum.

JCP Assemblyperson Saito Mariko said, "It's good to see that our effort working to increase young people's exposure to art works bore fruit. We'll continue to work on expanding eligible ages and extending the applicable period.

Thirteen exhibitions in six facilities will be open free to the target age group: Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum, Edo-Tokyo Museum, Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum, Tokyo Photograph Art Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, and Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum.
