Corona crisis reflected in rise in number of households on welfare

Classifying by family type receiving public livelihood assistance, the number of "other households" including many unemployed persons and of "households of disabled" on welfare in June surpassed that of the previous month for three consecutive months after business suspensions and layoffs began to surge in April due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the Welfare Ministry data released on September 2, a total of 1,628,999 households received public livelihood assistance in June, up 2,743 from the same month last year or up 159 from the previous month.

Of those households, the number of "other households" increased by 1,150 from a year ago to 244,154 or by 911 from May. The number of "households of disabled" also went up to 204,152, showing 3,518 more households than a year ago or 342 more than the previous month.

Meanwhile, the number of "households of the aged" on welfare was 905,107, "mother-child(ren) households" 76,269, and "households of invalid" 199,317.
