JCP Koike and CDPJ Azumi: We share goal of gov't change

March 23, 2021
Japanese Communist Party Secretariat Head Koike Akira and Azumi Jun, Diet affairs chief of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, on March 22 said that they will develop joint efforts to achieve a change of government in the next general election.

Appearing on the BS-TBS news program "Hodo 1930" aired in the evening of the same day, Koike and Azumi stated that the two parties agree that they will aim to create a new government to replace the LDP-led one.

A program MC asked if the JCP, the CDPJ, and the Democratic Party for the People (DPFP) can overcome discord over "zero-nuclear power".

Azumi answered, "We will never waver in our 'zero-nuclear' purpose." Koike also said, "We've already built a consensus to move in the direction of establishing a 'zero-nuclear' Japan."

Azumi said, "There is a strong consensus that the three parties will work to oust the LDP from power. This is the ultimate goal," and highlighted the need for the leader of the CDPJ, Edano Yukio, to unite the CDPJ, the JCP, the DPFP, independents, and the Japanese Trade Union Confederation (Rengo) in order to confront the Suga government. Azumi continued to say, "A success in bringing them all together will lead to turning the next general election into a one-on-one battle and will provide a chance for voters to choose between a new government and the current LDP-Komei government. It will be a very close battle."

Koike stated, "This unity of opposition forces is what the LDP is most fearful about."
