Gov’t must take responsibility for unexploded ordnance disposal: Akamine

July 22, 2010
On July 14 at a national road construction site in Itoman City in Okinawa, about 900 unexploded bombs were discovered through a magnetic survey.
These bombs were apparently brought into Okinawa by the U.S. forces during the Battle of Okinawa and abandoned when the war ended.
Japanese Communist Party member of the House of Representatives Akamine Seiken on July 21 visited the site and said to a Cabinet Office official, “There should be more dud bombs. The government should search for and dispose of unexploded ordnance not only at public sector construction sites but also at private sector construction sites.”
In the past, unexploded grenades were found at two different occasions at this construction site and in January 2009, a shell exploded near the site and a person was seriously injured.
