Shii criticizes US strikes on pro-Iran armed groups

Japanese Communist Party member of the House of Representatives Shii Kazuo, former JCP chairperson, on his X account on February 3 criticized the United States for having conducted airstrikes on targets of Iran-backed militia forces in Syria and Iraq.

The text of his X post is as follows:

In retaliation for an attack on a secret U.S. military facility in Jordan, U.S. Central Command launched strikes in Iraq and Syria on February 2. Whatever the reason may be, the U.S. military does not have the right to carry out attacks on other countries’ territory under the guise of retaliation. This U.S. action was a serious violation of the UN Charter and international law.

U.S. President Joe Biden issued a statement saying that his country will continue with the retaliatory attacks. I am very concerned that the U.S. strikes may further destabilize the situation in the Middle East. I strongly urge the U.S. military to immediately suspend the expansion of its military operations in the Middle East.
