Shii attends state funeral for CPV General Secretary Trong

July 26 and 27, 2024
Japanese Communist Party member of the House of Representatives Shii Kazuo on July 25 attended the state funeral held in Hanoi for Communist Party of Vietnam General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

At the funeral hall, Shii offered condolences to the bereaved family and signed his name in the condolences book.

On the following day, Shii held talks with CPV Central Committee’s Secretariat permanent member and politburo member Luong Cuong at the CPV head office.

Cuong expressed deep gratitude to Shii’s message of condolence dated July 20 and his participation in the state mourning of the late Party General Secretary Trong.

Shii extended his deep sympathies to the CPV and the people of Vietnam. Recalling meetings with Trong over the past three decades, Shii said, “The General Secretary’s passing is very sad because he was an irreplaceable friend with whom I could openly discuss any issue. I hope the people of Vietnam will overcome the pain of his loss and successfully promote the Doi Moi policy.”

Cuong noted that General Secretary Trong played a role as a bridge in the development of relations between the two parties, two countries, and two peoples. He said that Vietnam wishes to further develop these ties.

Shii referred to a meeting with Trong last December in which they reached agreement on issues such as promoting peacebuilding in East Asia in collaboration with ASEAN, strengthening JCP-CPV cooperation on global tasks including the abolition of nuclear weapons, and developing the two parties’ theoretical exchanges. He said, “I’d like to develop the two parties’ relations of friendship and solidarity even further.” Shii and Cuong agreed to work on the agreed-upon issues.

Shii introduced the JCP “Proposals for Peace Creation in East Asia” which the party drew up based on party visits to Southeast Asia. Shii indicated a wish to continue exchanging views on regional and international issues stated in the “Proposals”. The CPV official gave a favorable response.

Shii handed over his book focused on the topic of “communism and freedom”, and expressed his expectation that this theme will be dealt with in the JCP-CPV theoretical exchanges. Cuong in response showed his support for a further development in the two parties’ theoretical exchanges as suggested by Shii.
