60% of non-regular public workers annually earn only less than 2.5 million yen

September 12, 2024

It was revealed on September 12 that 60% of non-regular employees working in the public sector earn less than 2.5 million yen a year and are frustrated with their low income and precarious employment positions.

The Women’s Network on Non-regular Government Employees surveyed a wide range of public sector occupations, including school librarians, general clerks, library clerks, teachers, childcare workers, and women’s counseling support workers.

The most common employment status among them was part-time positions under limited one-year contracts (74%).

Sixty-five percent of those who were surveyed earn less than 2.5 million yen a year. Seventeen percent have been employed for more than eleven years, and 35% for more than six years. Forty percent of those who retired answered that they had to retire associated with the termination of their contracts.
